What happened to HyreCar
HyreCar was an online marketplace where car owners listed vehicles for rideshare and delivery drivers to rent. HyreCar filed for bankruptcy in 2023 and its business was sold to Getaround, which shut down its U.S. operations in 2025. The service is no longer available.
For drivers who depended on it, that meant losing a familiar way to find a car through an app, often on short notice. If you were renting through HyreCar, you had to find a new car and new terms fast to keep working.

There are still several ways to get a car for gig work. Each has its own rules, so compare them on the things that affect your week: total cost, deposit, insurance, which apps you can use and where you pick up.
- Uber Rent. Rentals from companies such as Avis and Hertz, booked inside the Uber app. Check their current pricing, deposit and which apps the car can be used for.
- Lyft Express Drive. Lyft’s rental program for people who drive on Lyft. Check its current pricing, availability in your area and whether you can use other apps.
- Kyte. An app-based car rental service. Check whether it serves your area and allows rideshare or delivery use.
